SHAD Canada presents itself as a summer program which allows students the opportunity to explore STEM and business subjects. However, it is much more than that. It is a month immersed in an environment saturated with some of the most fascinating people and ideas this country has to offer. It is a program that allowed me to explore a plethora of different subjects alongside people who were just as engaged and interested as I. Even for someone whose academic interests did not necessarily land in STEM, I still found myself enjoying the program immensely. Because as fascinating as the seminars and learning opportunities are, it is the community formed by your fellow peers which makes SHAD a valuable experience. SHAD is a program which not only presents a hands-on, engaging method of learning, but also a community which will persist for years to come.

Participating in the HYRS Program was an enriching experience that allowed me to immerse myself in the world of biomedical and health research. The program served as a great stepping stone for my future in the health sciences where I formally joined my mentor’s laboratory as an intern after the program ended. However HYRS wasn’t just about conducting formal academic laboratory work; it offered a holistic view of health research careers through campus tours, guest lectures, and the opportunity to socialize with fellow HYRS awardees at (paid-for) social events!
